What’s in Your Water?
Most of us don’t think about the quality of water we drink. What goes in it, how it’s processed, and what it goes through before it reaches our home. Yet, when we’re asked to drink straight from the tap, most would think twice, if not thrice!
As a matter of fact, water from the treatment plant is safe for consumption, but there is still a chance for contaminants to seep into it. Let’s take a look at a few ways water contamination could occur.
Water is drawn from lakes, rivers or groundwater. Bacteria can build up in these water catchment areas due to farming, waste from fisheries, fertilizers and trash from surface runoff. The harmful contaminants will collect in our drinking water source and can cause potential problems.
The contaminated water will then have to go through a stringent process of being filtered and purified. Chlorine is added into the water to eliminate any bacteria. However, the byproduct of chlorine could react with compounds in the water, forming Trihalomethanes (TTHM) which is a suspected carcinogen.
Although water is further treated to remove previously added chemicals, pipes that carry water into your homes can very often be broken or damaged, allowing outside bacteria and sediments to contaminate the water. Chances are, the older the residential area, the more likely the contamination.
