Biological Damage: What PFAS Does to the Human Body

Biological Damage: What PFAS Does to the Human Body

Once you ingest PFAS, they bind to proteins in your blood and circulate for years. Your body has no natural way to break them down, leading to cumulative internal damage.

  • Liver and Kidney Toxicity: The liver is the primary target. PFAS cause fat accumulation (Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease) and cellular inflammation that can lead to cancer. In the kidneys, PFAS are "reabsorbed" back into the blood rather than being urinated out, leading to chronic kidney irritation and Renal Cell Carcinoma.

  • Immune System Sabotage: PFAS effectively "mute" your immune response. Data from 2025 confirms that children with high exposure show a lower antibody response to vaccines (like tetanus/diphtheria), meaning their bodies don't "learn" to fight diseases as well.

  • Hormonal and Pregnancy Risks: These are powerful endocrine disruptors. They mimic natural hormones, causing thyroid disease and fertility issues. In pregnant women, PFAS can cross the placenta, leading to lower birth weights, developmental delays, and a higher risk of preeclampsia.

  • Metabolic Impact: Even with a healthy diet, high PFAS exposure is linked to a sudden rise in LDL (bad) cholesterol, increasing the long-term risk of heart disease and stroke.
